Students who plan an extended stay in Arequipa with the
intention of doing volunteer work for a non-profit/benevolent organization of the NGO (Non Governmental
Organization) type can count on EDEAQ's assistance, in principle at no financial cost. We will help you
with placement, accommodations, and all other aspects of daily living in Arequipa. The EDEAQ is familiar
with a number of benevolent organizations/NGOs that are active in and around Arequipa, and they know us
as well. But please be aware that the EDEAQ is not a placement agency.
Please be advised that EDEAQ's offer is contingent upon enrollment in a language course at our school.
For students at the Beginner I level, the minimum duration is between four to five weeks of coursework,
for those at the Beginner II level between three to four weeks, and for those at Intermediate I level
a minimum of between two to three weeks is required.
Students who are seriously planning such an undertaking are requested to mention this when registering
online (see dialogue box "Final Observations"). Please indicate your professional and educational
background as well as your work preferences. Please be aware that possible host organizations, under
normal circumstances, are only interested in volunteers staying at least four weeks and on a full
time work schedule basis. In other words: it is not very likely to find a suitable placement for
one or two weeks only, or an assignment parallel to your Spanish course (i.e. taking classes in the
morning and working in the afternoon/evening) - but it is not impossible.
You must bring (on a memory stick) your updated resume (CV), or you must send it before your arrival
as an MS-Word attachment, either in English, German or French (an English template, which you will
find when clicking this link, might
be of help), or - even better - in Spanish. We shall then streamline and, if necessary, reformat your CV (following the UN, EU, WB, etc.
templates/pattern), and, if necessary, translate it into Spanish. These services will cost you USD 30.00, which also means
that you will have, in the future, a professionally formatted CV in English and/or Spanish, which you
can always update yourself.
Please note that we shall not submit to you beforehand a list of organisations which might be interested
in having you as a volunteer, i.e. we shall not submit "concrete proposals" as long as you are not in
Arequipa. The procedure is the following: during the first week of Spanish classes and knowing you a
bit better, we shall identify, together with you, the organisations to be considered and arrange field
visits/interviews, which will enable you to get a more concrete picture of your possible host organization.
The basic prerequisite for doing voluntary work is fair language skills. The EDEAQ can only render
the above mentioned services in the event that the potential volunteer will have reached the intermediate
level II (in exceptional cases intermediate level I could be sufficient) when starting his/her work
assignment.
